What is permaculture?
Permaculture is a sustainable farming and lifestyle concept developed by Bill Mollison in the 1970s. Mollison, an Australian biologist and researcher, saw many problems in traditional agriculture and looked for alternative methods that were in harmony with nature.
Basic principles of permaculture
- Observation and interaction: Understanding and observing natural systems and interacting with them.
- Energy cycles: Use and reuse of resources to minimise energy waste.
- Closed loops: Waste is avoided and all products are recycled or composted.
- Diversity and stability: Promoting biodiversity to create stable and resilient systems.
- Long-term thinking: Planning and design with a view to future generations and long-term sustainability.
Applications of permaculture
- Horticulture and agriculture: Creation of diverse, perennial plant communities that provide food, energy and materials.
- Water management: Use of rainwater, grey water and efficient irrigation methods to minimise water consumption.
- Energy: Use of renewable energies such as solar and wind power as well as energy-efficient construction methods.
- Community and society: Promoting community projects and cooperatives to strengthen social networks and develop sustainable lifestyles together.
Permaculture according to Bill Mollison is more than just a method of agriculture; it is a holistic approach that aims to bring people and nature into harmony and promote sustainable lifestyles.
Agro-ecotourism
Agro-ecotourism or agro-ecotourism is a mixture of ecotourism and agritourism. It is a form of tourism in which visitors participate in sustainable agriculture and learn about local products. The popularity of agro-ecotourism, which is considered socially responsible and environmentally friendly, continues to grow as people look for new experiences outside the cities.
Whether for recreational or educational purposes or out of sheer curiosity, agro-ecotourism has managed to attract both international and domestic tourists. Driven by the need for more sustainable solutions and leisure activities, this mix of interests has the potential to grow further in the future.
Difference between agritourism and ecotourism
Agritourism brings tourists to a farm or ranch to learn about the local culture and increase their income, while ecotourism promotes sustainable and responsible travel to areas that preserve and protect the environment. Ecotourism, also known as nature tourism, is aimed more at raising awareness of environmental issues. Both forms of tourism also support the local community and promote a respectful attitude.
The combination of these two forms results in agro-ecotourism, a new and sustainable approach to tourism.
Why do we need agritourism?
There are many types of tourism that you may have heard of or even experienced yourself. Culinary tourism, business tourism, sports tourism and even medical tourism - it's all there. The special thing about agro-ecotourism is that it focuses strongly on protecting the environment and reducing the carbon footprint while still offering an enjoyable holiday.
For guests, agro-ecotourism is an escape from hectic city life. It gives them the opportunity to immerse themselves in nature and learn about a new culture. This not only provides endless activities for travellers, but also supports local farmers.
Agro-ecotourism can create jobs in areas where poverty is usually high, improve the food supply chain, strengthen traditional agricultural practices and promote local heritage through art.
Moreover, it is a great thing because it is committed to preserving natural habitats and increasing landscape diversity, and also engages with permaculture.as agro-ecotourism educates people to adopt more responsible consumer behaviour, this shift in awareness can bring about a change in our society.
